Math 11:55-1:00
Welcome to Mrs. Virostko's 3rd grade Math! I just wanted to tell you a little bit about what math is going to be like this year.

Third grade math is primarily focused on multiplication, fractions, area and perimeter, and geometry. We will jump right in to multiplication and practice our facts throughout the year in order to build our fact fluency.

When students come into class, they will have a warm-up to complete that we will go over as a whole class. Then, we will practice our math facts. The goal for our third graders is to complete 60 problems in 3 minutes. We will start the year with addition and move to multiplication once we have practiced in class for a while. From there, we move to our lesson for the day. I use "I Do, We Do, You Do" when I teach. So, students will watch me thinking out loud to solve a problem, then we will do several examples together, discussing thought processes and strategies used, then students will use what they've learned to work independently. Fast finishers will have a variety of center activities to choose to complete.

In my math class, we are working at a slower pace, and I've got TAs in the classroom to help give small group and individual help.

If your child is absent, they can get their missed work from me when they come back to school. The make-up work will need to be completed at home and returned within one week.

Homework will be a packet sent home the first day of each week and due at the end of the week. Students are welcome to turn in homework late, but they get extra class incentives for turning it in on time.

Below is an example of what the homework packet might look like. It changes throughout the year to give students additional practice on third grade skills.
