Mrs. Virostko's Literacy

Monday-Friday 8:30-11:15 am

Welcome to Mrs. Virostko's Literacy Class!  Here is an overview of what our day looks like:
Students may start coming to class at 8:10 am every weekday.  They should drop off their personal belongings at their locker and only bring what they'll need for Literacy.  This includes any supplies or materials necessary for optimal learning.

When students come in, they will get their materials and begin working on their Passports.  This includes a variety of vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension activities.  Students are expected to complete one assignment for each day of school for the week.  If there are 5 days of school for the week, students will need to complete 5 activities by Friday. If there are 4 days of school for the week, students will need to complete 4 activities by the end of the week.  Passports also include additional activities for fast finishers.  Students earn class dollars for completing assignments.  I usually give 15-20 minutes each morning (8:30-8:45 or 8:50am) for students to work.  If additional time is needed, students may take the work home to be completed, but it will need to be brought back by the end of the week for credit.

After Passports, we do some vocabulary practice, learning new words.  On Mondays we have a Word of the Week that is introduced (and practiced in Passport work), and Monday-Thursday we have a Word A Day (also practiced in Passport work and tested on Fridays).

From there, we move on to reading skills and strategies. This will include vocabulary, fluency practice, and reading comprehension instruction.  We will be reading a variety of books and keeping an interactive notebook for students to refer to throughout the year to keep skills fresh.  Students will be participating in whole-group lessons, buddy work, and independent work in class throughout the year.

We will finish up with writing lessons, building sentences, organizing and improving writing.

I love ending the class with a read-aloud!  I have a whole collection of incredible stories that we read together.  It's one of my favorite parts of the day.

Fridays are busy days, and usually when we have our vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension assessments.  We also have Library from 10_46-11:15 on Tuesdays.

Make-up Work:  If your child is absent, they can get any work they missed when they come back to school.  This work will need to be completed at home and turned in within one week.

Below are printable documents of the homework pages that will be sent home each week.  If your child needs a replacement, they are welcome to come ask me, or you can access them here.  Below that are the spelling lists for each week.

Homework Pages

Homework consists of a reading log and spelling practice.  The reading Log has an explanation of what is to be done each day Monday-Thursday.  Spelling Practice includes the word list and an activity menu.  Students should practice at least one activity with all 20 words each week.  They may also do 2 activities, 10 words each.  If your child needs additional practice, that is fine.  Spelling practice needs to be turned in with the reading log on Friday.
